ACHPER (SA) Playing for Life Seminar - understanding a game sense approach

This seminar will feature keynotes that explain Game Sense as a strengths-based approach for PE teaching and sport coaching. Practical workshops will use the Game Sense approach and cover primary and secondary school movement and physical education teaching. Speakers include Christina Curry, University of Western Sydney, Ian Renshaw, Queensland University of Technology, Shane Pill, Flinders University, Rick Baldock, ACHPER (SA) and Terry Magias, Flinders University.

ACHPER (SA) is delighted to offer a quality professional learning opportunity for teachers and coaches of students in both Primary and Secondary years on the use of the ‘Game Sense Approach’. The seminar will focus on how to achieve the Australian Curriculum for HPE emphasis on the adoption of a strengths-based approach and the use inquiry processes to achieve the intended student learning for the achievement of the curriculum standards, and how coaches can adopt a positive game-centred pedagogy for game skill learning. Practical workshops will use the Game Sense approach and cover primary and secondary school physical education teaching and coaching concepts. A range of striking/fielding games and invasion games will be focussed on throughout the day.

The day will offer both a specific Primary AND Secondary focused sessions - so if you are a teacher of either Primary or Secondary students - this seminar is for you!

  • The Game Sense Approach as a strengths based pedagogy for sports coaching, Dr Shane Pill, Flinders University
  • Using a constraints based approach to teaching games and sport, Dr Ian Renshaw, Queensland University of Technology
  • Teaching for effective games and sport learning (TfEL) using the Game Sense approach, Dr Christina Curry, University of Western Sydney
  • Closing session: Assessing Game Sense in schools and clubs
