The Big Day In Jr is a Science and IT expo designed to give Year 5 and 6 students an insight into how science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) interact in the real world.

"This is an extremely exciting opportunity for the school," says Bentleigh West Primary School principal Steven Capp.

“The students will get to play with next generation technology and learn from industry experts.”

"[They] can then see where the basic skills of mathematics, IT and science may lead them in the future."

Workshops will be run by representatives from the Australian Computer Society Foundation, Solar Buddy, WiseTech Global, Apple, F1 in Schools,, Microsoft, CSIRO, RMIT, Adobe, Makers Empire, La Trobe University and Tata Consultancy Services.

Bentleigh West Primary School chose to host the Jnr Big Day In as a celebration of the Stonnington and Glen Eira's (SAGE) school networks focus on STEM.

“Our school has always valued science and technology education,” Capp says.

“The school has lifted the focus on science and mathematics and ran a media arts program where the skills in all areas come together in a creative way."

Big Day In Jnr draws its inspiration from the original Big Day In - a popular Australia wide IT Expo aimed at secondary school students.  It was developed to cater for the increasing interest from primary schools.

Guest schools involved in the event include: Malvern Valley Primary School, Skye Primary School, Toorak Primary School, Coatesville Primary School, Croydon Primary School, Mullum Primary School, East Bentleigh Primary School, Caulfield South Primary School and Bentleigh West Primary School with special assistance from students from Brighton Secondary College.
