New Splash apps provide back-to-school learning on-the-go
Online education portal ABC Splash has made digital learning even more accessible with three new tablet apps, available for free on iOS.
The first two apps, named Best of ABC Splash, provide teachers and students with easy access to the ten most popular topics from the Splash library. The topics are broken down by subject and are supported by video clips, fun quizzes, teaching guides and curriculum links.
The first Best of ABC Splash app has been designed for primary school teachers, parents and students and allows users to explore topics including Minibeasts and the Australian Wilderness, along with national history themes such as Convicts and Colonial Australia.
The second Best of ABC Splash app has been designed for secondary school teachers, parents and students and offers subjects including Rights and Freedoms, Robots, Money and Finance.
These apps deliver outstanding, award-winning free educational content at a time that tablet usage continues to grow in classrooms.
The first content available on the apps showcases the ten most popular topics, including:

The third app, Gobbling Goblins, is a fun mathematical game aimed to improve mental arithmetic and numeracy skills for Australian primary school children.
Set at ‘The Toadstool Bistro’, three fierce food critics – the Gobbling Goblins - will challenge students, parents and teachers to solve simple addition and subtraction problems using strategy, and develop confidence using number sequences.
Linked to the Year One curriculum standards, Gobbling Goblins can be played via the Splash website, or downloaded for free on iOS or Android.
The digital Splash apps follow the revamped website based on extensive feedback gathered from teachers, parents and students over its two-and-a-half years in service.
The new-look site now hosts over 3000 free resources mapped to the Australian Curriculum covering English, History, Geography, The Arts and STEM subjects; Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, supporting the education needs of primary to secondary school students from years Foundation to Year 10.
Director of ABC Digital Network, Angela Clark, said: “Splash has grown over the past three years to be one of Australia’s leading digital educational resources. Today we are very excited to launch these two new apps which will continue to enhance classroom learning. Digital education is no longer something aspirational, today’s students are the first truly digital generation and these resources are integral to a 21st century classroom experience.”
Annabel Astbury, Head of Digital Education ABC, said: “Teachers and parents from around Australia have told us how much they value the high-quality resources on ABC Splash, which are all mapped to the curriculum. Our mission at Splash is to allow students and teachers to explore, play and learn with engaging interactive resources for the 21st century learner, and our new apps make these resources even more accessible.”
The adaptions to the site centre on its usability, with a cleaner interface making it easier for users to navigate and find what they need. An extensive A to Z browser makes fast work of searches, while nifty teacher guides provide extra inspiration for the classroom. Students can even delve deeper into chosen subject areas using a wide selection of multimedia digibooks.
The site contains high-visible tabs that offer a one-click solution to sort by subject, age range, or interactive material choice, while a central search field box offers a predictive typing function for quick results. Master tab options allow a quick switch between student and teacher requirements, allowing students to explore fun learning experiences specific to their school year.
