Keynote Address
Materials Engineering: At the Intersection of Art, Science and Industry

This talk will describe how Materials Engineering solves important industrial problems, and how key insights to materials performance produce industrially
important opportunities. Engineering materials are a part of everyday life and no engineering activity is commenced without their consideration. The place of Materials Engineering in current and future industries will be discussed in both an Australian and International context. The speaker will draw from his own experiences with breakthroughs in the metallurgy of Al alloys, which continue to provide significant industrial opportunities. He will also discuss some of the work he has done in industry with companies such as BAE Systems, Northrop Grumman, Australian Submarine Corporation, Leica Biosystems, Ford Performance Vehicles and Holden Special Vehicles.
Professor Roger Lumley is Head of the Department of Engineering at Latrobe University. He has over 20 years’ experience in materials engineering, manufacturing, R&D and project management. Roger has a PhD in Materials Engineering from the University of QLD, and is a registered (chartered) Mechanical Engineer. In addition to being a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering, he is also a Fellow of the Institute of Engineers, Australia. He is a member of Materials Australia, the American Foundry Society, as well as The Minerals, Metals and Materials Society. He is internationally recognised in both research and industry for his work in materials engineering and his contributions to manufacturing industries. He is an advocate for Australian manufacturing and recently, led a team that won the Australian Industry Research Group Medal for development and commercialization of technologies that have been employed in the F35 Joint Strike Fighter.
