DARWIN, Aug 11 - The Manyallaluk school decided to write to a range of prominent figures including the Queen and players from the Essendon football club to get students engaged in literacy.
"Making the writing experience authentic with an audience beyond just the teacher and reaching a global audience gets our students excited about writing," principal Ben Kleinig said.
The school received a reply from the Mary Robinson, lady-in-waiting to Queen Elizabeth, who said Her Majesty was interested to hear from the school children from the remote community.
"Her Majesty thought it was so kind of you to write to her and was interested to hear a little about yourselves," Ms Robinson wrote.
In her letter to the Queen, Alice a year 2 student wrote: "Dear Queen Elizabeth, did you have a birthday cake? Old Mary was sitting down drinking a cup of tea watching the dogs chase a buffalo. But don't worry, she can run fast. From Alice."
The school also received a hand written response from the Essendon Football Club.
