Arndell School, a school for Specific Purpose, supports up to 35 students, years K-6, experiencing mental health and behavioural difficulties.  The school is a State-wide provision, established as joint service of the Department of Education and the Department of Health.  It is co-located with the Coral Tree Family Service on the grounds of Macquarie Hospital in North Ryde. The school provides individual education plans to support students to access curriculum and address their behavioural, social and emotional needs, and, in partnership with Northern Sydney Child and Youth Mental Health Service (CYMHS), mental health services for eligible students.

The school aims to successfully transition students to their mainstream educational settings, with most students completing the program in 9-12 months. Arndell operates as a 4:1 model with students in attendance each Tuesday – Friday. On Mondays, students attend their mainstream school for an integration day, supported by Arndell staff.

Three of the school’s classes serve clients of the Coral Tree Family Service, a unit of Northern Sydney CYMHS. Students for this service are drawn from government and non-government schools across NSW. In addition, the school operates two classes, classified ED (Emotional Disturbance) for students attending public schools across the Northern Sydney region. Students for these classes are placed by a regional panel.

Arndell School is a complex teaching and learning environment with multiple stakeholders in addition to students, parents and carers. These include feeder schools from Government, Independent and Catholic Schools, Northern Sydney Health Service, Family and Community Services, Out of Home Care providers and the NSW Police Service. The role of Assistant Principal may involve liaising with these stakeholder groups to co-ordinate effective support plans for students and their families.  Effective risk management strategies are paramount to the safety and well-being of the students and staff and clients of co-located services. Success in this role will require effective time management, resilience and strong interpersonal skills.
